When Janet called in to her apartment the following afternoon, she greeted her daughterâs new appearance with a mix of horror and disbelief.
âHow could you do something so drastic?â she demanded. âIâd pass you on the street without a second glance.â
âThatâs the idea, Motherâ¦and this is only the first step. I already use a pseudonym. Iâm going to talk to Leo and change my name to Clare Frazier by deed poll.â
âA name change?â Janet sank into the sofa. âDid I hear you correctly?â
âYes.â Carla sat opposite her and tried to calm her down. âAs long as Iâm Carla Kelly, Iâll never be left alone.â Frazier was Gillianâs maiden name and Clare is my second name, so itâs a family name.
âYou may think so.â Janetâs voice rose. âBut I hope you donât expect me to call you anything except the name I gave you at birth.â
âNo one outside my family is to know otherwise. Do you understand, Mother? This is very important.â
Janet leaned closer to Carla. âWhat in the name of God have you done to your eyes?â
âContact lenses. Purely cosmetic.â
âBut theyâre green.â
âAn appropriate choice, donât you think?â
Janetâs lips tightened. Her red lipstick had blurred into the lines above her mouth and Carla had a sudden impression of how her mother would look when she was an old woman. Time was laying stealthy hands on all of them. Six yearsâ¦and Carla was still upright, still fighting.
âI did warn you about Robert,â said Janet. âNow youâre facing into a divorce, and heâs facing into a new life with that oneâ¦that strap of a one who threw herself at him as soon as your back was turned.â
âWhat do you want, Mother? Marks out of ten for being right?â
âI take no pleasure in being right. Iâd give anythingâ¦â Janetâs eyes watered as she stared at Carla. âYou were so beautiful. And nowâ¦your father will be heartbroken. He loved your lovely hair.â
âDad will understand. He always does.â Carla handed her a box of tissues. âI need to protect myselfââ
âBut you ask for trouble. Honestly, Carla, what do you expect when you hang around with prostitutes?â
âAnita was a child, Mother. And I didnât hang around with her. She was my friend.â
âYour friend?â Janet was becoming increasingly agitated. âYou can see why the media would want to know those details.â
âThere were no details. But thatâs never stopped them writing about me. Iâm selling my apartment and buying one on the other side of the canal. Iâm moving on, Mother. Isnât that what you keep asking me to do?â
âYes. But not by changing into a green-eyed man. Honestly, Carla, this is the most ridiculous thing youâve ever done. I wish I hadnât been right about Robert. But he made a decision to get over things and now he has a son. What do you have? Tell me, what do you have?â
âA daughter who is waiting for me to find her.â
